Luke 8:5 says, "A Sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it."
TRAMPLED
Luke is the only writer that makes a specific reference to the "seed" being "trodden" or "trampled" down.
The term is used only 5 times in the NT.
1) Four of the five times, the term is used in a literal sense. (Matt. 5:13; 7:6; Lk. 8:5; 12:1)
2) Once it is used in a figurative sense. (Heb. 10:29).
In 4 out of 5 times, what is of the highest worth, is considered to be worthless. [ salt (Matt. 5:13); pearls (Matt. 7:6); seed (Lk. 8:5); the Son of God (Heb. 10:29) ].
DEFINITION
Historically, the term to be "trampled under foot", was:
1) A term of war, to describe the total conquest of the enemy, and their abasement before their conquerors.
2) It was a term of mockery and derision, to treat as valueless someone or something, in a scoffing manner.
INTENSIFIED
This word, used in Luke 8:5, has a prefix, which serves both as an intensifier, and is descriptive of the completeness of the action.
In other words, the "seed", was not just trampled on, but that which fell by the wayside, was totally and completely crushed.
VALUABLE
One of the ways in which the devil, in his desperation, attempts to make the word of God of none effect, is by making it a complete mockery in the minds of those who hear it. If he can convey a sense of utter ridiculousness concerning the word, that it is totally useless in content, people will not value what is not valuable.
By contrast, we who have already been "sown", with the incorruptible seed, both in our lives and in our presentation of it's truth, must portray in word and deed the extreme value of the word, as the first solution to every problem, and the very source of life itself, to be found only in Christ Jesus.
The Word is inseparable from it's author and as such is everything that God, our Father is, and will still speak eternally, long after the ink and paper, it has been recorded upon, has faded with time.
There is no more powerful force in the universe, at our disposal, than the spoken Word of God, which He has magnified above His name (Ps. 138:2).
Let us value as precious, what He has set His value upon.
You are God's Best and God's Best is Yours.
