Luke 8:14 says, the word is choked out of our lives by, "...cares and riches and pleasures of life..."
Luke 8:14 is the only one of the three passages, concerning the parable of the different types of soil, that links together what chokes the word out of us, as pertaining to this "life"; whereas the other two passages seem to separate the cause of "choking" into their own individual sources.
[ "... (1) cares of this age, and the (2) deceitfulness of riches, and (3) the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word..." (Mk.4:19)]
LIFE
What is really interesting, is the choice of word, in the Greek, for "life". There are two words, that are usually translated "life", in the scriptures, which are seemingly polar opposites.
1) The root of this word, is where we get the words biography and biology from, meaning the writing about someone's life, and the study of life, generally.
2) The second word is where we derive zoology from, meaning the study of animal life, mankind included.
BIOS - this Greek transliteration of the first word refers to:
1) The duration of life, in this world.
2) The manner of life, in which we live, in this world, having a moral implication, relating to conduct; behavior.
3) In 6 out of 11 NT uses, the word means, [as in Luke 8:14], wealth; worldly goods; that which is necessary to sustain or support life, in this world. [Basically, it is material possessions].
(This is the word used in 1 John 3:17, exhorting those who have this "world's goods", to sustain the lives of Believers less fortunate, by giving them of their own possessions. This act of giving, is a demonstration that they truly have the love of God in them.)
In the NT, (bios) is only used of people, and is concerned with our natural existence, sustained by material possessions; our livelihood.
To loosely translate, Luke 8:14 expresses 3 different aspects that choke the word, specifically concerned with sustaining our worldly "life".
ZOE - this transliteration of the second word for life, though in classical Greek, originally meaning the life force that animates both mankind and animals, took on a new perspective in the scriptures.
Since in Hebrew thought, and in truth, all life comes from God, this word took on a more nobler meaning, that extends beyond merely giving the ability to exist; in a physical body, as opposed to death.
LIFE of GOD
This word came to mean not only life that is from God, but the life of God!
Since this is the life of God, it has all the aspects of God. It expresses who God is, in essence, His person. To possess this life, is to possess God.
This is the life that we received when we were "born again". It is, like God, eternal, never ending, or ceasing to exist.
It does not, just have some future value, but it is something that we possess right here, right now. It is an internal, vital force of creative power, that has the "natural" tendency to produce what it is.
GOD'S LIFE
To the Hebrews, "life", as sourced in God, was synonymous with health; well-being; success; and salvation.
You, as one born of God, possessing His life, have a natural tendency to succeed; to prosper in your endeavors; to live a healthy and productive life.
The divine principle that dwells within you, will "naturally" pull you in an upward direction to be in authority; to be the head and not the tail; above, and not beneath. God's life, in you was not for failure, only success!
This life principle within, also has a "natural" tendency to reproduce after it's kind. It is your nature to desire to see others share in this God- Life. We call that evangelism.
Let us live life, and let His life, live through us.
You are God's Best and God's Best is Yours
