"This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success" (Josh.1:8, KJV)
This verse is the key to succeed in any area of life. However, it is not just a suggestion. God is actually commanding Joshua to constantly speak; mutter; mumble the word, day and night, and the result will be success in governing the people; fighting battles; leading the nation to sustained longevity and prosperity. I think sometimes we miss the "command" part and just see this as an optional suggestion, that we can try, and see how it works out.
God also gave a similar command concerning the king, that, "...he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests, the Levites; and it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them...to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel" (Deut.17:18-20)
God not only commanded Joshua, the leader of the nation, and commanded the future kings of Israel, but he commanded every Jewish parent, concerning His word: "...you shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up, and you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes and you shall write them on the posts of your house, and on your gates" (Deut.6:7-9) [In other words, you shall talk the word all the time, and God's word will automatically, when it is in your heart, control what you put your hand to; what you allow in through your eye gate; what you see and do...your behavior]. Why? "The LORD COMMANDED us to do all these statues, to fear the LORD our God for our good ALWAYS" (Deut.6:24).
Again, Proverbs commands, "...attend to my words, incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes; guard them in the midst of your heart, for they are life to those that find them, and health to all their flesh" (Proverbs 4:20-22).
Hezekiah, the king of Judah, had his advisors make a copy of the Proverbs of Solomon, so that, as counselors to the king, their thoughts and opinions would be guided by the wisdom of the word of God (Prov.25:1).
Jesus said, "The words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life" (Jn.6:63).
Paul, by the Spirit of God said, "the holy scriptures are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus" (2 Tim.3:15). [The meaning being, that God's word produces salvation; deliverance; healing; health; prosperity, in your life].
Does it make sense that we should obey God's command, and actually put the Word of God in our hearts, all the time?
You are God's Best and God's Best is Yours
