Heaping it Up! (2 Timothy 3:16)

Updated: Feb 15

2 Timothy 3:16 says that "... all scripture breathes-God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,..."

PROFITABLE

In the Greek, the word "profitable" is (ophelimos), which is derived from (ophello), a root which has a very unusual word picture attached to it.  The imagery is that of sweeping up, with a broom, into a pile, or, to sweep into a heap.

The word meant "to heap up" or to accumulate. This imagery eventually led to the idea of gain, or benefit; to make useful, from which came the implied meaning of producing the greatest advantage.

The word refers to, not just a little bit of success, but a "heaping up", to the point of multiplying, or raising higher, elevating, to a greater position or honor.

When the scriptures are declared to be "profitable", it means that those on whom they are having an effect, are directly benefiting, in a positive manner. There is something good happening that makes it worth continuing to submit to hearing the word.

Obviously, there is great value in allowing ourselves to listen to, and obey the scriptures. There is a distinct advantage, that when weighed against not having the input of the scriptures in our lives, it is a very logical decision, to continue to hear, and act on the word.

MORE SUCCESSFUL

The idea conveyed, in the Greek word translated "profitable", is that the scriptures make better, or more successful. In other words, because the scripture breathes-God, the teaching will produce success; the reproof will accomplish what it was intended to do; the correction will be received and applied; and the instruction will effectively cause one to live in the victory of an awareness, by faith, of the authority in which we stand (righteousness).

Everything about the word profitable has to do with success and the accomplishment of what is intended. It means that everything it concerns, is brought to a whole new level of achievement.

AFFIRMATION:

The scripture breathes-God, and as I read it out loud, and declare it, God's word is profitable to me, and successfully fulfills it's purpose in my life.

You are God's Best and God's Best is Yours.
