Proverbs 4:20 says, ''My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings..''
ATTEND - is an expression taken from the observation of animals, meaning ''to prick up'' the ear. When a dog or dear hears a sound, their attention immediately becomes absorbed by what they heard, and they ''prick up'' their ears to focus in exclusively on the sound. [ That's the Hebrew word.] The Greek word used here in the LXX (Septuagint), is the same word used in Hebrews 2:1, translated ''give heed'', meaning, ''to hold a ship on course'', until it is anchored at its intended destination. [This passage (Proverbs 4:20ff) is parallel to Hebrews 2:1. ].
These two powerful word pictures from the Greek and Hebrew, give us fresh revelation and insight in relation to listening to God's word.
1) ''Prick up'' your ears, focus in on what God is saying, excluding every other voice, to get His message to you.
2) Continue to listen, in every situation in life, until you arrive at the destination that the ship of God's word is taking you, and that word is securely anchored in your heart.
INCLINE - in this context, expresses attitude. It literally refers to something bending towards something. It conveys two thoughts in this verse:
1) Yielding to God's word, ''bending'' towards it.
2) Leaning away from something else, specifically, anything that is speaking contrary to what God is saying.
You are God's Best and God's Best is Yours
