Anchor God's Word in Your Heart (Hebrews 2:1; Proverbs 4:20-21)

Updated: Jan 21

Hebrews 2:1 says, ''... we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let (them) slip...''

LET THEM SLIP - This phrase, is one word in the Greek, representing a nautical term. ( Both Greek and Hebrew words in scripture paint ''word pictures'' that give us a visual representation of what God is communicating to us.) The ''word picture'' is that of a ship gradually, and almost unnoticeably, drifting past a certain point. In the rest of the context of the verse, the ship is drifting away, because it has not been anchored. The image is the result of careless neglect.

GIVE HEED - This is another nautical term, here meaning to bring a ship to land, where it can be anchored. (i.e., to hold a ship on course, until it is anchored at land.)

MORE EARNEST - These words are elsewhere translated ''exceedingly'', or ''more abundantly''. These two words, in the English, ( though only one word in the Greek), emphasize above ordinary effort, intensifying the exhortation to keep on course until you've anchored the ship.

WE OUGHT TO - These words, in the KJV, sound almost like a suggestion, but nothing could be further from the truth. These words lose their force when translated into the English. They do not simply imply some sort of obligation, but rather, they express ''urgent danger''.

The whole verse, in paraphrase, says, that there is urgent danger, and that we have to make above average effort, to bring the ship of God's word, that we have heard, securely into the harbor of our heart, and anchor it there. God's word, not securely anchored in our heart, will gradually drift out of our heart, and so gradually, that we won't even notice it's departure. It is not just getting God's word into our heart, but keeping it there.

USE IT don't LOSE IT

The best way to not lose it, is to use it! Speak the word; pray the word; sing the word; pray in tongues over the word; meditate the word; and keep going over what God has already taught you in the word. Keep the word in focus![ This verse of scripture is parallel to Proverbs 4:20 and 21].

You are God's Best and God's Best is Yours.
